Sundowns edge closer to Chiefs as table toppers slip up to SuperSport United

SuperSport United enjoy a memorable night in Nelspruit as they overpower on form Chiefs to a well deserved 2-1 victory. The win sends a reminder that the title race is far from over.

In another pick of PSL action it was league favourites Kaiser Chiefs who travelled to the Mbombela stadium to take on SUpersport United in a game that could possibly have resulted in Chiefs 9th straight victory in almost as many games. The game was the first for both sides in the new year and promised to be a tantalizing affair between two recently on form teams. Despite numerous efforts on both parts it was SuperSport United who took the spoils on the day with a scintillating 2-1 victory over their title contending rivals.

The win sparks a much needed boost for SuperSport United as they set sites on a reachable league title, in some ways a subtle reminder to their foes Sundowns as well as Chiefs that the title race is far from over.

As expected the game started in quick succession with both sides showing good signs on the ball, it was however Matsatsantsa who claimed first blow as striker Bradley Grobler helped his side to an early 1-0 lead in the 9th Minute. In true Chiefs fashion they showed little signs of giving up and continued to add the pressure on Supersport well into the first half. The scores remained unchanged as both sides went into the break looking to make an early impact as the second half loomed.

The second half kicked off with little disappointment, and much of the energy exhibit in the first half was carried through. Chiefs started the better of the sides with a penalty being awarded as early as 3 minutes into the second half, a soft call. Daniel Cardoso with a calm finish to level things. In a game that continued to show the makings of a must win final, Chiefs continued to come close to adding a second with several attempts crashing against the crossbar.

However despite Chiefs efforts it wasn’t to be. The match continued to show equal footing with great tempo and quality exhibited from both sides. The score remained equal for most of the quarter but by the 61st minute this changed thanks to former pirates talisman Thamsanqa Gabuza who fired home SuperSports winner.

The much anticipated fixture ended 2-1 with SuperSport claiming a memorable winner under the packed house of the Mbombela stadium. Chiefs will most certainly look to the upcoming weeks fixture against Highlands Park to bounce back to recent winning form, while Supersport United take on 6th place Maritzburg United in another grueling encounter.
