The most prestigious sporting event in the world is upon us, it’s time to clear the schedule and prepare yourselves for what will be a monthlong period of football royalty. From 20 November 2022 – 18 December 2022, Qatar will host the Fifa World Cup 2022, and become the first-ever Arab country to welcome the best 32 national football teams in the world to their home for what is set to be one of the most controversial Fifa World Cups of all time.

The Host Nation – Qatar
The 22nd iteration of the inaugural Fifa World Cup will be taking place for the very first time in its history in the Arab country of Qatar. Regarded as one of the most controversial World Cup decisions, there continues to be much backlash and skepticism surrounding many aspects of Qatar’s successful bid.
On the 10th of December 2010, 22 Fifa Executive Committee members met in Zurich to vote for who they believed should be the host nation of the Fifa World Cup 2022. Australia, Japan, Qatar, South Korea, and the United States formed the 5 bid nations up for selection.
Controversy struck the Fifa World Cup 2022 far before the tournament was set to begin, with corruption, money laundering, and bribery against Fifa Executive committee members, as well the Fifa president Sepp Blatter all taking center stage.
Apart from the questions surrounding the legitimacy of the vote, Qatar has also faced strong criticism around conditions and treatment of the Fifa World Cup 2022 labour force working on the World Cup infrastructure, their strong religious views to the LGBTQ community, and what will be the first-ever shifting of the tournament timing from what is generally a June/July period, to November/December thanks to Qatar’s harsh summer climate conditions.
Qatar is the smallest nation by area ever to have been awarded a FIFA World Cup – the next smallest by area is Switzerland, host of the 1954 World Cup, which is more than three times as large as Qatar and only needed to host 16 teams instead of the current 32. Qatar also became only the second country (not including Uruguay and Italy, hosts of the first two World Cups) to be awarded a FIFA World Cup despite having never qualified for the World Cup in previous years.
The majority of the Fifa World Cup 2022 matches will be played in the capital city of Doha, a very modern, globalized metropolitan often referred to as a miniature Dubai because of its very innovative and futuristic architecture. Located on the coast of the Persian Gulf, Doha is Qatar’s fastest-growing city and home to more than 80% of Qatar’s population.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 Stadiums
The Fifa World Cup 2022 will see a total of 8 stadiums playing host to the tournament’s fixtures, 6 of the 8 stadiums that will be used in the tournament are located in the Doha metropolitan area, it is the first World Cup since 1930 that will see the majority of matches being held in one city.
Qatar has built seven stadiums for the World Cup finals as well as a new airport, metro system, series of roads, and about 100 new hotels. An entire city has been constructed around the stadium Lusail which will host the final match.
Stadium 974
The only waterfront venue with a spectacular view of the Doha skyline, Stadium 974 was constructed using standard certified shipping containers and modular steel elements, echoing the nearby port and the industrial history of the plot.
Stadium 974 will host seven matches during the FIFA World Cup, with six group games and one Round of 16 knockout match.
Al Thumama Stadium
The Al Thumama stadium design represents the gahfiya – a traditional woven cap worn by men and boys across the Middle East.
The gahfiya forms a fundamental layer of the traditional clothing of the region. It is also a symbol of dignity and independence.
The stadium is set to host six group-stage matches along with a Round-of-16 match and one quarter-final.
Khalifa International Stadium
Located in Doha, Khalifa International Stadium, also known as the national stadium has hosted a long list of momentous sporting events since its inauguration in 1976. In fact, rarely is football or athletics mentioned in Qatar without referring to this venue.
The stadium is set to host six group-stage matches, one Round-of-16 game and the play-off for third place at Qatar 2022.
Ahmad bin Ali Stadium
Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, popularly known as the Al-Rayyan Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar, It is currently used mostly for football matches and it is the home to Al-Rayyan Sports Club and Al-Kharitiyath Sports Club.
The stadium (tournament capacity 40,000) is set to host six matches in the group stage and one in the Round of 16.
Al Bayt Stadium
Al-Bayt Stadium is a retractable roof football stadium in Al Khor, Qatar. With a capacity of 60,000, Al-Bayt takes its name from ‘bayt al sha’ar’ – which were tents historically used by nomadic peoples in Qatar and the Gulf region.
Al Bayt Stadium will host the opening match of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, along with numerous other games, including one semi-final.
Lusail Stadium – The Final
Lusail Stadium is Qatar’s biggest tournament venue (80,000 tournament capacity) and will host the final, along with matches during every stage of Qatar 2022.
The stadium’s design is inspired by the interplay of light and shadow that characterises the ‘fanar’ lantern
Al Janoub Stadium
Al-Janoub Stadium, formerly known as Al-Wakrah Stadium, is a retractable roof football stadium in Al-Wakrah, Qata. The stadium has a capacity of 40,000 and is set to host six group-stage matches along with one Round-of-16 match.
Education City Stadium
Built specifically to host the Fifa World Cup, Education City Stadium is located in Al Rayyan, Qatar, within several university campuses at the Qatar Foundation’s Education City.
The stadium is the first Qatar 2022 tournament venue to achieve a five-star design and build rating from the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS).
The 32 Participating National Teams
So which nations qualified for the Fifa World Cup 2022 in Qatar? Believe it or not, the qualifying rounds for all World Cups begin about 3 years prior to the official first World Cup game. For the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, qualifying stages began back in 2019 in which qualifying tournaments conducted by FIFA were held across all 6 confederations, these included AFC (Asia), CAF (Africa), CONCACAF (North and Central America and the Caribbean), CONMEBOL (South America), OFC (Oceania), and UEFA (Europe), in the end, a total of 31 teams qualified, Qatar being the host nation would secure automatic qualification rounding the total teams participating to 32.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 Group Stages
The group stages of the tournament will see the 32 teams be put into 8 groups of 4 teams each, each group consists of one “seeded” team based on FIFA Rankings and recent World Cups, and the other teams in each group are selected at random from the top finishers in qualifying play and the host team.
Groups are set up so that no group contains more than two European teams or more than one team from any of the 5 other FIFA zones (there are six FIFA continental zones; Africa, Asia, North, and Central America and the Caribbean, South America, Oceania, and Europe)
Each team within a group will play 3 games during the group stages, three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss. The top two teams from each group advance to the Knockout Stage of the World Cup.
The FIFA World Cup 2022 Knockout Round
The knockout stage consists of 16 teams, with this being made up of the top two finishing teams from each of the 8 groups. The Knockout Stage is a single-elimination round in which the winner of each Group plays against the runner-up from another group, teams will only play once, there are no draws, so extra time and penalty kicks are used to decide the winner.
Winners of the round of 16 will then progress to the Quater Finals, the winner from there to the semi-finals, and then finally the last 2 remaining teams will battle it out for the title of World Cup Champions in the final game to be held on the 18th December 2022
The FIFA World Cup 2022 Team Selection
One of the biggest grievances with this year’s iteration of the FIFA World Cup has most definitely been the timing, with club related football just ending a week prior to the kick-off of the FIFA World Cup opening game, players have had very little time to not only mentally prepare with their designated national squads, but club related game injuries have seen a number of key stars missing out on the tournament for lack of adequate recovery time.
Following the final qualification of the 32 national teams taking part in this year’s FIFA World Cup, the very obvious topic of discussion will of course be the squad line-up. So who are the star players who made the cut? who are the players to look out for? and who are the big upsets we won’t be seeing in Qatar?
The 32 national teams involved in the tournament are required to register a squad of up to 26 players, including three goalkeepers. Only players in these squads are eligible to take part in the tournament. The final squad list for the tournament was submitted to FIFA by the 15th of November 2022.
