Robert Firmino celebrates Liverpool's 1-0 victory over Tottenham Another game, another win, another Liverpool masterclass as Klopp’s side flexed their muscles against a weak Mourinho effort to claim a 1-0 victory. The win see’s Liverpool claim the record for the best start by any team in the top five european leagues, 61 pts from 21 games, an incredible achievement and a true testament to Klopp’s side dominance in the league this season.
Mourinho looked to be the first manager to spoil the reds run of form, a win which would ultimately end Liverpool’s incredible 38 league game winning streak. Mourinho looked to debutant Japhet Tanganga as a much needed support to the defensive line, this a response to missing Harry Kane who is out until april with a hamstring injury, the youngster showing great fight and resilience despite his team losing out to a Roberto Firmino first half effort.
The game started much the way of the Liverpool side who dominated the possession for the first 20 min, a Roberto Firmino missed effort was followed up by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain only to be cleared off the line by new comer Tanganga. Shortly after it was a towering header by Uefa player of the year Virgil Van Dyk who looked to open Liverpool’s account, Tottenham shot stopper Paulo Gazzaniga keeping out his efforts.
It was wave after attack for Liverpool, with Tottenham showing no real signs of threat despite a few counter attacks. Liverpool eventually being rewarded for their previous efforts through a thunderous Roberto Firmino effort, the goal taking his tally to 10 this season, 15 in all competitions. It was Mo Salah who looked to double his sides lead before the break, a great run followed by a snapshot which whizzed past the upright, the score remaining unchanged as both sides went into the break.
Tottenham started the second half with renewed purpose as they looked to the counter in order to equal matters, Serge Aurier with a fine effort that was saved by Becker shortly after the restart. The formidable pair of Salah and Firmino looked sharp on attack as they pressed ever more for a second, Gazzaniga denying the pair of their attempts.
Son Heung-Min had a great opportunity late on to equal things for Tottenham, however he blazed his shot over the crossbar, a goal which could of changed thing for what was a better spell of pressure by Mourinho’s side. Tottenham continued to put on the pressure as they went on the hunt for a much needed equaliser, a stunning cross in by Aurier which was met by Giovani Lo Celso who unfortunately couldn’t find the back of the net.
The fixture came to an end with Liverpool claiming the spoils. The win continues Liverpool’s dominance in the top flight this season and edges Klopp’s side ever closer to ending a 30 year title drought. For Mourinho’s men a time to regather and strategize ahead of their next fixture against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup.
